Husband Who Earned $20,000 Yearly, Fights Separation Suit

Aaron Bell, whose income from his real estate and other holdings once exceeded $20,000 yearly, today told Supreme Court Justice Thomas J. Cuff how his wife had put him on a $1-a-day dole.

Bell told the court how his wife manipulates the purse strings of the family as Mrs. Esta Bell filed suit for a separation. Mrs. Bell brought her matrimonial troubles to court because, she said, her husband was prone to walk around their home at No. 90 Downing street muttering, “why doesn’t she drop dead.”

Bell denied he has been guilty of marring the felicity of twenty-eight years of domestic life. He said agrieved [sic] in a big way because, in 1932, he turned over several thousand dollars worth of his properties to his wife on her promise to return them to him. According to his lawyer, Bennett E. Siegelstein, Mrs. Bell not only refused to return the property but insisted that after that her husband get along with $1 a day which she gave him each morning when he appeared before her door at the Downing Street address for his daily substance.
